Sexual Addiction is a deadly disease and the human being is affected by this disease from the very beginning. Once I was reading an abstract on ‘Sexual Addiction.’ Later I studied on this subject more thoroughly. There were few striking features I derived from it, which I think we all should be aware of it. This will either help us if we are one of the addicts or we can help somebody close to us who is an addict. I would love to share with you all these points one by one as follows:
1. Compulsivity: any loss of the ability to choose freely whether to abstain or to continue certain activity.
2. Continuity: Continuation of a behavior even if there are adverse consequences, like, health loss, job problems, marital problems etc.
3. Obsession: Obsession for an activity (which is not socially acceptable).
After that I learnt the adverse effects of sexual addiction, which are frightening and deadly. Those are as follows:
A. Destroys Marriage & Family Relationship
1. There is decrease of sexual interest of the addict with his/her own spouse.
2. The addiction increases depression level high of the addicted person.
3. The addict loses its respect & importance of the spouse and children.
4. It brings shame and guilt of cheating and adultery to the addict & his/her family.
5. There is mental or physical separation with his/her spouse.
6. In some cases it even goes to the level of ‘Divorce.’
B.
“Sex is a gift of God that has been given to the married couples to enjoy it within the boundary of marriage. When we go against this rule we commit sin against God, against the person with whom we are involved, against our spouse and against our own body which is united to only one person.”
1. The addict neglects his/her official or business responsibility.
2. His/her performance decreases.
3. He/she loses his/her importance & respect of the boss, colleagues, and subordinates.
4. Ultimately he/she may lose the job.
C. Dangerous exposures to sexual & mental diseases
1. The addict may contract AIDS & other sexual diseases.
2. The addict may transfer these diseases to his/her spouses.
3. The addict may suffer from severe depression, frustration and ultimately nervous breakdown because of the addiction he/she indulges in.
Friends! Sex is a gift of God that has been given to the married couples to enjoy it within the boundary of marriage. When we go against this rule we commit sin against God, against the person with whom we are involved, against our spouse and against our own body which is united to only one person. Then we suffer. The consequence is brutal & lethal. In the next part of this article, we will see ‘how can we overcome sexual addiction.’ Till that time good bye and take care.
