How to SLEEP WELL at night?

Sometimes when my stress level reaches the peak I spend sleeplessness nights. But I won’t call it as insomnia as it doesn’t linger for a long time. But I feel very disturbed when I don’t get a good sleep at night. I really empathize for those who suffer from insomnia or sleeplessness. It’s really pathetic and difficult to cope with.

Wikipedia says, “Insomnia is a symptom that can accompany several sleep, medical and psychiatric disorders, characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep and/or difficulty staying asleep. Insomnia is typically followed by functional impairment while awake."

I am not a clinical doctor or psychiatry that I can’t help in any medication or so but as a counselor I can give few tips to avoid sleepless nights. Those tips are as follows:

1. Sleeping Time:
Your sleeping time should be fixed. Never deviate from that time. Don’t watch TV late night if you’re suppose to sleep at 10:30 pm or 11 pm at the best. Don’t disturb your sleeping time at all in any case.

2. Lay (Don't lie) on the Bed:
If you don’t get a sleep don’t just lay on the bed trying to sleep. Get up and start reading a book or working on your hobbies that interest you. But never watch TV if you don’t feel sleepy. And when you feel sleepy leave whatever you do instantly and go to sleep.
I feel very disturbed when I don’t get a good sleep at night. I really empathize for those who suffer from insomnia or sleeplessness. It’s really pathetic and difficult to cope with.
Remember! Don’t just LIE on the bed trying to sleep.

3. Eating Dinner:
You need to eat your dinner as early as possible before going to bed, because we Indians eat our dinner really late and then go to sleep immediately. We suffer from indigestion or reflux and then get disturbed in our sleeping time.

4. Early Rising:
Whether you sleep late or don’t sleep you need to get up early in the morning. It doesn’t mean that you will get up at 4 am or 5 am in the morning, but at least get up before 7:30 am.

5. Picturise:
I don’t know how effective it is, but for me it’s very effective. I just Picturise one of my good experiences or events just closing my eyes and when I wake up I realize that I was actually sleeping. Try out sometimes while trying to sleep.

There are many authentic and approved tips and methods for insomnia which can be prescribed by doctors and psychiatrists but I gave few of the very simple methods to try initially instead of gulping medicines or trying stringent methods.

So friends! Try SLEEP to sleep in the night peacefully.

I like your suggestions, Chiradeep. I generally don't suffer from insomnia, but like you if I'm upset about something I can't sleep, or I'll wake up at 3 am. The very worst thing is to lie in bed thinking!

I usually read or drink a glass of warm milk or take a sleeping pill when I can't sleep. I can't sleep with the television on so that's a plus for me. However, my wife hates it when there is no noise, so I started turning on the humidier with its constant low humming sound.

Everyone who knows me (or has read me) knows I've always had trouble sleeping. I get by on four to five hours each night. Tonight though I"m feeling tired and think I just might fall asleep. I'd just said to my husband I was too tired to read. But then I saw your title and thought I'd read just one more article. I'm glad I did Chiradeep. You offer some good advice. Sweet dreams!

Know what did it for me... and my kids? Deep breathing.

Take 20 deep breaths... visualizing the breath entering, filling the lungs, hold and then exiting. About 10 second or so per breath.

Trick is to not think about anything but the breathing. If thoughts enter the mind and you become aware, you have to start over at 1 and try to make it to 20.

Most of the time this works like a charm.

Occasionally it backfires because I get overly-frustrated because I can't stop thinking, but then I just turn on the tv and let my mind really go blank.

I think that one reason we don't sleep as well as people did many years ago is, because we have so much more traffic on the streets of our mind now- I guess we need to learn traffic control!- thanks Chiradeep- another thought provoking article- Always- Ella

As always, you leave great, realistic, advice for everyone. As you know, I have an awful time sleeping. Your tips are helpful and I will definitely keep them in mind. One thing that has helped me, and I know that people talk about having a sound that is constant, music, waves, nature...well, I have my pug snoring. His snoring literally helps me sleep. Whatever it takes, right?
